May 4, 2007, Newsletter Issue #63: The Price of Popularity

Tip of the Week

You may not be popular thanks to your enhanced male breasts, but gynecomastia surgery is. While Botox, microdermabrasion, collagen injections, chemical peels, and laser hair removal were the most popular male procedures in 2004 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, gynecomastia treatment is in demand. The Gynecomastia surgeries grew 48% from 1997 to 2001 in the U.S.

The average cost for that popularity is $2,700, although we've seen figures of $3,000, and the ASPS 2004 survey reported that average surgeon's fees were $2,812. Insurance may not cover gynecomastia, no mater how popular it is. You can explain that your condition is congenital (my dad had it too), or part of treatment for a new illness. Check with your insurance carrier--gynecomastia is considered medically necessary if the breasts interfere with your everyday activity. Talk to your doctor about gynecomastia, and you can cure the problem so that you, rather than your disorder, can be in demand.
